These are a few of my favorite things ....

Well, I must admit that The Sound of Music is one of my "favorite things" ... but another fave thing to do is to read. In my readings I come across some great quotes and it always seems that they find me at a time in my life that makes them "fit." I keep these quotes and often go back to read them ... just taking a moment to either chuckle at their comedic value or to ponder their application to my current place in life. Yesterday I found my stash of quotes and thought I'd share a few of them with you ... just for kicks. Tell me what some of your favorite quotes are!

"You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." ~Desmond Tutu

"Cleaning your house while your kids are still growing up is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing." ~Phyllis Diller

"Anyone who thinks the art of conversation is dead ought to tell a child to go to bed." ~Robert Gallagher

"My second favorite household chore is ironing. My first being hitting my head on the top bunk bed until I faint." ~Erma Bombeck

"Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God."

"He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge." Psalm 91:4

"I hope that my achievements in life shall be these --
that I will have fought for what was right and fair,
that I will have risked for that which mattered,
that I will have given help to those who were in need
and that I will have left the earth a better place for what I've done and who I've been."
-C. Hoppe

"Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain."

"Good timber does not grow with ease. The stronger the wind, the stronger the trees." - J. Willard Marriott

"Speak up for those who can't speak for themselves ..." Proverbs 31:8

The following quote is from a great story "The Velveteen Rabbit" and (aside from some very special Bible verses) is my all-time favorite quote. As an adoptive mom I often hear comments from others, usually adults, that refer to my children's birth parents as their "real parents" and I'm "the adoptive parent." I love to quote this classic book to enlighten my well-meaning friends and acquaintances when they innocently misspeak:

"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."

"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.

"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."

"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

So tell me some of your favorite quotes. I'd love to add them to my collection! You can either reply here at the blog, or email me at momkate@att.net .

Until Tomorrow,
Kathy ... my hair has been loved off, and I'm a bit shabby, but well-loved
