As I sat down this afternoon to blog I was proud of myself for a witty title already in my mind and a number of interesting topics to discuss with all of you. But God had other things in mind ...
My fingers were tapping out the first paragraph as I chuckled at my own little joke, and Nita walked in. She looked devastated and simply said, "Mom. Lemondrop is gone. She was OK when I fed her yesterday, but now she's dead." Then the tears fell. Lemondrop was the last of 5 parakeets gifted to Nita years ago by my aunt, and her great-aunt Debbie. Lemondrop was unique. She was a true lutino parakeet ... yellow feathers and pink eyes. We don't know how old she was, but she sure kept us all laughing over the past few years with her many escapes from her flight cage and her incessant "chirping" when the birds in the bush outside of her window started their morning chattering.
Isaac and Nita are now planning her memorial service. She's been placed in a shoebox coffin with toys from her cage and a picture of the kids. On top of her box is written, "Here lies Lemondrop. We don't know when she was born, but she died on Sunday January 18, 2009. She was my friend and my bird. I love you Lemondrop."
So, Rest in Peace, Lemondrop. We love you.
Until Tomorrow,
Kathy ... drying the Lemondrop tears of 5 sad kiddos
